My favorite DIY electric screwdriver just got some useful upgrades – and it's on sale

ZDNET’s key takeaways

  • The new Bosch Go features USB-C charging, a vast improvement on the old microUSB port.
  • There’s a bigger battery for longer runtime and a ring light on the front to illuminate the workspace.
  • The screwdriver comes in a handy carry case with a selection of bits, so you have everything to do the job in hand.

Two years ago, I got myself a Bosch Go electric screwdriver. The thing was amazing; it’s been on my best electric screwdrivers list ever since, and it’s been working incredibly hard on countless projects, indoors and outdoors, and it’s still going strong.

Well, the old Bosch Go has gone to a new home because I’ve picked up a replacement — the new Bosch Go. So, what’s new that prompted me to buy a new one?

First, the micro USB has been replaced with USB-C. I don’t know about you, but micro USB has been out of my life for a long time, and keeping track of a cable for one thing still stuck in the past was a pain.

There’s also a bigger battery, up to 2.0Ah from 1.5Ah, which is quite a bump and something I appreciate when I’ve got a long job, or forgotten to put it on charge after the last job.

There’s also a ring light on the front of the screwdriver for seeing what you’re doing. In the past, I’ve had to fiddle with the flashlight on my phone or a headlamp. Now the light is exactly where I need it.

The new Bosch Go also has more torque settings, providing finer control over working with fasteners and less chance of breaking something or rounding off the head of a screw.

The no-load speed of 360 rpm and max torque of 5 Nm remain the same, which is fine for a tool like this. You don’t want too much speed or power in an electric screwdriver — if you do, you need an impact driver.

The ergonomics have also been improved, with the activation switch being made bigger and easier to use in various hand grip positions.

The new screwdriver retains the same press-on-the-fastener-to-activate feature, and the Smart Stop feature that detects excessive vibration or when the screwdriver has jumped out of the fastener and cuts the power has been refined and improved. This feature goes a long way in preventing damage to the workpiece.

The carry case is also better, being small enough to carry yet fitting the tool perfectly and offering room for a charging cable and a selection of bits.

The case also has printed instructions, which is a great touch and something I wish more tool and gadget manufacturers would do.
