Steve Clarke: Craig Gordon hopes Scotland manager extends deal

Heart of Midlothian goalkeeper Craig Gordon hopes Steve Clarke remains in charge of Scotland beyond next year’s World Cup.

Clarke has indicated he was likely to leave after next year’s World Cup but 42-year-old Gordon is full of praise for what the former full-back has achieved with the national team.

“I think he’s done fantastically well for Scotland. When he came in, we weren’t qualifying for tournaments. We’ve now qualified for two Euros,” said Gordon, who is likely to earn his 80th cap when Scotland face Greece in a Nations League play-off on Thursday.

“We’ve gone close for a World Cup as well. It’s been a great time to be part of the squad. It’s been enjoyable to be in that environment.

“The professionalism and the amount he’s changed throughout that time to get us to where we are now. He’s done a fantastic job.

“I wouldn’t be telling him to stop there. He’ll make his own mind up. As I say, it’s a great dressing room to be part of. He’s created that and hopefully it will continue for a long time yet.”

Scotland face Greece in a Nations League double header this week with the winner taking their place in League A for the next version of the tournament that begins in September 2026.

Scotland have also been drawn in the same group as Greece in 2026 World Cup qualification.

“We’re going to get used to playing against them. They’re a good team,” added Gordon.

“Recent results will show that. Defensively, very sound. It’s going to be a difficult game for us. We need to play really well to try and get through.”
